"Essential Questions on the Growth of Futsal in Nigeria: A Conversation with Coaches"
Can we meet you sir:
Coach:
I'm Adam Dauda Kolapo, an 18-year-old futsal coach with an Level 1 Futsal Coach Certificate from England
1.Coach, what’s your take on the current state of Futsal in Nigeria?*
Coach Adams: Honestly, it's a bit of a mixed bag. We've had moments of promise, but we still lack consistent support and infrastructure. The passion is there, but we need more resources and government backing to take it to the next level. I'm optimistic, though – with the right investment, we can build a strong futsal culture in Nigeria.
2.Why do you think Nigeria hasn’t developed a female national futsal team yet?*
Coach Adams: That's a tough question, but I think it's largely due to a lack of awareness, resources, and opportunities. Futsal isn't widely known or played among females in Nigeria, and we haven't had the infrastructure or programs to support female participation. Plus, cultural and societal factors might also play a role. But I'm glad you're highlighting this – it's time we start investing in female futsal and creating opportunities for girls and women to play!
3.What are the main challenges hindering the growth of fustal at grassroots level
Coach Adams: As a futsal coach, I believe the main challenges hindering growth at grassroots level are multifaceted. Lack of awareness and exposure is a major one – many people don't know what futsal is or how to play it. We also struggle with limited access to quality facilities and equipment, insufficient funding, and limited coaching opportunities. Plus, we need to encourage more participation, especially among females and rural communities.
But here's the thing: I'm optimistic. With the right support, we can turn these challenges into opportunities. I'd love to see government investment in futsal infrastructure, training programs, and community outreach. That would make a huge difference!
4. Do you believe Fustal should be part of football academics and school sports programs
Coach Adams: ABSOLUTELY! 😊 I believe futsal should be an integral part of football academies and school sports programs. Futsal develops technical skills, speed, and creativity – skills that translate perfectly to football. It's also a great way to introduce kids to the game, keep them engaged, and promote physical activity. Plus, it's a fantastic tool for identifying and nurturing young talent.
5. How can fustal help improve a player's technical ability for the main football game
Coach Adams : Fustal develops technical skills like ball control, dribbling, passing, shooting and decision-making, making players more proficient in football
6. What kind of support do coaches and clubs need to kick-start proper Fustal leagues
Coach Adams: I would say we need funding for facilities and equipment, coaching education programs, league structure and competition support, promotion and marketing to raise awareness, government recognition and support, partnerships with schools and communities.
7.Do you see potential for Nigeria to compete in international Futsal tournaments if structured properly?*
Coach Adams: If we get the structure right, Nigeria can make a mark on the international futsal scene! With proper investment, facilities, and competition, we can develop a strong national team that competes with the best.
Imagine Nigeria playing in the FIFA Futsal World Cup or African Futsal Cup... it's possible! We just need to focus on grassroots development, coaching education, and creating opportunities for our players to gain experience.
8.What role can the NFF or Sports Ministry play in reviving and sustaining Futsal in Nigeria?*
Coach Adams: The NFF and Sports Ministry can also provide funding for futsal infrastructure, like courts and equipments, support coaching education and training programs, help create a national futsal league and competitions, facilitate international partnerships and friendly matches, recognize futsal as a legitimate sport and include it in national sports programs.
9.Have you seen interest from young girls in Futsal? If yes, what can be done to nurture it?*
Coach Adams: I've seen a surge of interest from young girls in futsal! They're eager to learn and play. To nurture it, we need dedicated girls' futsal programs and leagues, female futsal role models and coaches, safe and supportive playing environments, scholarships and opportunities for talented players, community outreach and engagement initiatives.
10. If given the opportunity, would you be open to coaching or helping form a women's futsal team?*
Coach Adams: ABSOLUTELY! Smile ,I would love to coach or help form a women's futsal team! I'm passionate about empowering women in sports and developing their skills.
