From Asisat Oshoala Academy to Benfica: Janet Akekoromowei's European Dream Comes True

Janet Akekoromowei has taken another major step in her career after completing a long-term move to Portuguese champions Benfica.

The Nigerian youngster began her football journey at the Asisat Oshoala Academy, where she developed into one of the country's most exciting attacking prospects. Her performances earned her a move to Nasarawa Amazons before she later joined Bayelsa Queens, continuing her steady rise in the Nigeria Women Football League.

A move to Spanish giants Barcelona Femení was believed to be on the cards, but the deal was called off after Akekoromowei suffered an injury while away with the Nigerian national team.

Rather than slowing her progress, the setback has opened another door. Benfica have now won the race for the highly-rated forward, handing her a long-term contract as they strengthen their squad ahead of the new season.

The Portuguese club is expected to officially unveil the Nigerian striker in the coming days, as she prepares to begin her first chapter in European football.
