FC Robo International: A Journey of Passion, Player Development and Success in Nigerian Football

FC Robo International: A Journey of Passion, Player Development and Success in Nigerian Football

By Kofi Graphy

In Nigerian football, a club’s story is not measured by trophies alone. It is also about the players who pass through its doors, the opportunities it creates and the people who keep the dream alive through different seasons. FC Robo International has a story that brings all these things together.

Founded on 19 April 1999 by Emmanuel Osahon Orobosa, FC Robo International has grown from its grassroots beginnings into a recognised name in Nigerian football, particularly in the women’s game. Based in Mushin, Lagos, the club has continued to provide young footballers with opportunities to develop their talents and compete at higher levels.

Over the years, FC Robo Queens, the club’s women’s team, have become a major part of that journey. Their performances in domestic competitions, their involvement in the Nigerian Women Football League and their connection to the development of players who have gone on to represent Nigeria have all contributed to the club’s place in the game.

From grassroots football to a recognised name

Building a football club takes more than assembling a team for match day. It takes patience, discipline, commitment and the determination to keep going when the results do not come easily.

That is part of the story of FC Robo International.

Since its establishment, the club has worked to develop young players and give them a platform to grow. Its involvement in women’s football has helped make FC Robo Queens a familiar name in Lagos and beyond.

The journey has not always been easy. Keeping a football club competitive requires resources, administration, training facilities and the people willing to work behind the scenes. Yet FC Robo have continued to compete, develop talent and add to their collection of honours.

For a club with roots in grassroots football, that journey matters. Every season brings new challenges, new players and another opportunity to build on what came before.

A pathway for young talents

One of the most important parts of FC Robo’s story is its connection with player development.

Nigerian women’s football has benefited from clubs willing to invest time in young players before they become household names. FC Robo’s development pathway has been associated with players who have gone on to represent Nigeria and pursue professional careers.

Names such as Asisat Oshoala, Rasheedat Ajibade, Esther Sunday and Gift Monday feature in the club’s wider player-development story. Their careers show the opportunities that can emerge when talent meets the chance to train, compete and improve.

For FC Robo, seeing players progress beyond the domestic game is an important part of its contribution to football. It gives younger players something to aspire to and shows that the journey from local football to the international stage is possible.

Player development is not always rewarded with a trophy. Sometimes, its impact becomes clear years later, when a young footballer who once needed guidance is competing at the highest level.

The trophies that tell part of the story

FC Robo Queens have built a strong record in domestic competitions, particularly in Lagos State. Their success in cup football has become an important part of the club’s identity.

2022: Betsy Obaseki Women Football Tournament champions

One of the club’s notable achievements came on 16 September 2022, when FC Robo Queens won the second edition of the Betsy Obaseki Women Football Tournament.

The Lagos side defeated Edo Queens 1–0 in the final at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City. Rukayat Oladiti scored the decisive goal in the 24th minute, handing FC Robo the trophy against the hosts.

It was a significant victory and another honour for a club that had continued to establish itself in women’s football. The result was reported by Independent Newspaper Nigeria in its coverage of the tournament final.

2023: Another Lagos FA Cup triumph

On 23 April 2023, FC Robo Queens defeated Dannaz Ladies 3–0 in the Lagos State FA Cup final.

Contemporary reports described the victory as the club’s 13th title in the competition. It was another successful outing for the Queens and a reminder of their long-standing presence in Lagos women’s football.

2024: Retaining the Lagos FA Cup

The Queens returned to the final in 2024 and once again faced Dannaz Ladies. FC Robo secured a 4–1 victory on 31 March to retain the trophy.

Reports at the time described the triumph as the club’s 14th Lagos FA Cup title. The result continued a successful run in the competition and gave the team another reason to celebrate.

2026: Another state title

FC Robo Queens continued their success in Lagos State by defeating Ghetto Tigers Ladies 4–0 in the Lagos State Women’s Federation Cup final on 3 May 2026 at Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Onikan.

The four-goal victory added another trophy to the club’s honours and formed part of a memorable season for the Queens.

Reports differed on whether the win represented the club’s 14th or 15th title in the competition. The all-time count should be checked against official records, but the result was clear: FC Robo Queens were the 2026 champions.

July 2026: Inaugural Lagos Queens Cup champions

FC Robo Queens added another title in July 2026 by winning the inaugural Lagos Queens Cup.

After a goalless draw with Ayisat Yusuf FA, the Queens prevailed 4–2 in the penalty shootout to claim the trophy. It was another achievement for the team and another opportunity to demonstrate its competitive strength.

These victories form part of a wider trophy history. FC Robo International has also listed honours such as the Hon. Muiz Banire Cup, Nathaniel Idowu Cup, C. Woerman Cup, First Lady Cup, Nigeria Women Amateur Play-off and Nigeria Women Professional League. A complete list of dates and titles would benefit from confirmation through the club’s official records.

The 2025–26 season: A year of silverware and individual recognition

The 2025–26 campaign gave FC Robo Queens plenty to celebrate. The team won a pre-season tournament, finished top of its NWFL Premiership group, qualified for the Super Six, lifted another Lagos trophy and saw one of its players receive a major individual award.

It was a season that showed the club’s ability to compete on different fronts.

Starting with silverware: The Queens Cup

FC Robo Queens began the campaign with success at the 2025 NWFL Southwest Pre-season Tournament, popularly known as the Queens Cup.

On 10 November 2025, the team defeated Remo Stars Ladies 2–0 in the final at the Lekan Salami Stadium in Ibadan.

Oluwakemi Adegbuyi opened the scoring in the 26th minute, while Rafiu Tosin added the second goal late in the match to secure the trophy.

The team also collected individual honours, with Mariam Yahaya finishing as the tournament’s leading scorer and Rafiu Tosin named Most Valuable Player.

It was an encouraging start to the season. Winning a pre-season competition does not guarantee success in the league, but it gave the Queens an early reward for their preparation and an opportunity to build confidence before the serious work began.

Finishing top of Group B

FC Robo Queens carried that momentum into the 2025–26 NWFL Premiership.

Competing in Group B, the team finished top of the table with 38 points from 18 matches. Their record included 12 wins, two draws and four defeats. They scored 32 goals and conceded 13, finishing with a goal difference of plus 19.

Their attacking output was among the strongest in the group, while their defensive record helped keep them ahead of their rivals.

The home record was particularly impressive. FC Robo won all nine of their home league matches, dropping no points at home and conceding just one goal across those games.

That consistency proved important in securing top spot in the group and booking a place in the NWFL Premiership Super Six.

Rafiu Tosin delivers the decisive moment

One of the key moments of the regular season came on 22 April 2026, when FC Robo Queens defeated Remo Stars Ladies 1–0 to confirm their qualification for the Super Six.

Rafiu Tosin scored the winning goal in first-half stoppage time, connecting with a corner delivered by Rodiat Yusuf.

It was a crucial result at an important stage of the campaign. The victory secured the Queens’ place among the league’s leading teams and gave them an opportunity to compete for the national championship.

The Super Six challenge

The Super Six brought a different level of pressure, with the qualified teams competing for the league title.

FC Robo Queens finished fourth in the final standings, recording one win, one draw and three defeats. They did not finish as champions, but reaching the final stage after topping their regular-season group remained an important achievement.

The experience also gave the team more exposure to the demands of competing against the country’s leading sides. For the players and technical crew, it was another opportunity to learn, assess their progress and identify areas to improve.

Another Lagos Federation Cup title

The Queens added another trophy on 3 May 2026 when they defeated Ghetto Tigers Ladies 4–0 in the Lagos State Women’s Federation Cup final.

The victory continued the club’s long record of success in Lagos women’s football and gave the team another achievement to celebrate alongside its league campaign.

For the players, winning a state title while competing in a demanding league season was another reward for their work. For the club, it reinforced the importance of remaining competitive in the competitions available to them.

Adegbuyi’s season to remember

The campaign also brought individual recognition for Oluwakemi Adegbuyi, who was named 2025–26 NWFL Premiership Player of the Season at the league’s end-of-season awards.

Adegbuyi finished with 11 goals across the campaign, including three during the Super Six. Her performances made her one of the season’s standout players and underlined the contribution of FC Robo Queens’ attacking unit.

The award was a major personal achievement, but it also reflected the work of the team around her: the players creating chances, the coaching staff preparing the side and the club providing a platform for her talent to develop.

Individual awards often bring attention to one player, but football remains a team effort. Adegbuyi’s recognition became one of the highlights of a season in which the Queens had plenty to celebrate.

More than trophies: The people behind the badge

Every club has people whose work rarely receives the same attention as the players on the pitch.

At FC Robo International, founder Emmanuel Osahon Orobosa has been central to the club’s journey. Coaches, administrators, team officials and support staff also play their part in preparing players and keeping the club running.

The work continues long after the final whistle. Training sessions, player welfare, match preparation, travel arrangements and administration all contribute to what supporters eventually see on match day.

A successful football operation depends on more than the starting eleven. It needs people who can organise, guide, support and prepare the team throughout the season.

The players deserve their recognition, but the wider team behind them deserves to be part of the story too.

A legacy still being written

Since its founding in 1999, FC Robo International has continued to make its mark through grassroots development, domestic competition and its involvement in Nigerian women’s football.

The club’s journey is a reminder that football development does not happen overnight. It takes years of work to build a club, help young players find their feet and create an environment where talent can grow.

The 2025–26 season added another chapter to that history. Winning the Queens Cup, finishing top of the NWFL Premiership group, qualifying for the Super Six, lifting the Lagos State Women’s Federation Cup and seeing Adegbuyi named Player of the Season all contributed to a campaign worth remembering.

The league championship remained out of reach, but the season gave the club plenty to build on. The challenge now is to maintain that consistency, keep developing young players and turn strong regular-season performances into further success on the national stage.

For FC Robo Queens, the ambition must remain bigger than the next trophy. It is about continuing to compete, developing the next generation and giving more young footballers a chance to make something of their talent.

FC Robo International has already built a history worth documenting. Its next chapter will be shaped by the players, staff and supporters who continue to believe in what the club can become.

From Mushin to the wider football stage, the journey continues.
